Let's See How You Write
The streets of the city were buzzing with activity. Nyra sat on top of a rooftop, watching for her mark to appear. One of Seti’s guards was making rounds in the marketplace and she noticed he carried a heavy money pouch. She smiled to herself. All mine. She thought.
Basir was looking at some fresh produce while making his rounds. His stomach grumbled in protest. Maybe he could get something for lunch here. All of a sudden he felt someone bump into him. “Sorry, sir.” A female voice spoke out, barely audible with the crowd around him. Then he reached to his side and noticed that his money was gone! He panicked, looking around for the female he heard. She was no where in sight.
Nyra giggled to herself. “Well, That was easy.” The guard wasn’t much of a challenge. Over the past 6 years she had enjoyed tormenting the guards of this city. Most were arrogant, pompous, idiots that felt nothing for the people that were starving on the city streets. Nyra began to hop rooftops over to where her home was. Her home was a loft located in an old section of the city. The only person that knew its location was Amethyst. Amethyst was her pet cat that she had found on the street when she was about fifteen. The animal had been abused and neglected horribly. She was a Mau, a beautiful cat that had been Nyra’s only friend for years. Nyra thanked Bast everyday for sending her friend to her.
Amethyst was laying on Nyra’s bed, being a lazy cat for once. Nyra sat down next her friend, petting her soft fur while she purred. Silently she thought about the amulet that her mother had left her. It bore a depiction of Bast. The priestesses had told her it meant she had a special connection to Bast and could call upon the goddess in times of need. Nyra highly doubted that. There had been many times she had tried in vain to call the goddess to her. Nothing had worked. She breathed a heavy sigh and laid back on the bed. Her fate was already set. She lived and would die a thief. It was all she ever knew to be true.
The money from the guard would be more than enough for food to last her the winter. The rest she would probably give to the priestess Ama to hand out to the poor. Nyra was far from being a glutton. She took what she needed from her victims and gave the excess away. Someone would probably catch her one day but it didn’t bother her enough to stop her from stealing. Once a thief, always a thief.
